1 Introduction

This deployment assumes deployment of one Net2MAX Centre by a carrier of in country with a population of 30 million, 25 million online customers (fixed, mobile, internet combined) and 10 million existing customers of its own.

Since Net2MAX is free to join, it is expected that the Net2MAX Centre will have 20 million members and 50 million devices by the end of the first year (maximum number of members per Net2MAX Centre is currently 1 trillion members or devices).

2 Trial

Support of up to 100 trial customers using Net2MAX Servers from Net2MAX Labs in Australia. This is a functional trial and NOT a capacity or a quality trial.

Use of servers so far away means substantial reduction in capacity and quality, but should be sufficient in providing an credible evaluation platform for the functionality of Net2MAX.

Carrier must contribute at least 30 local phone numbers to the trial. All calls into those phone numbers are to be forwarded to a nominated Community Station using VoIP with SIP signalling and G711 codec. Standard SIP call information like ANI and DNIS must be supplied with each call.

Net2MAX Labs will work with the carrier to identify the best existing Community Station to interconnect with the carrier's SIP server. If no suitable Community Station is found, Net2MAX Labs will deploy a pair of new Community Stations in the carrier facilities.

2.1 Hardware

Community Stations

Hardware cost for Community Stations is expected to be about EUR2 per user on average. As user requirements increase and hardware price-performance should improve at about the same rate to maintain the EUR2 per user in the near future.

Current specification for an entry level Community Station:

  1. CPU:       Dual Core CPU with FSB 1333MHz (prefer Quad Core)
  2. RAM:       2 x 2GByte 667MHz Dual Channel (prefer 800MHz)
  3. Disk:       2 x 1TByte SATA (prefer with NCQ)
  4. LAN:       2 x 1Gbit Ethernet (prefer with VLAN)

At May 2008 retail prices, above basic specification (without the preferred options) costs about EUR800. Community Stations always work in pairs for improved performance and reliability, so 2 of those are required for trial operation.

Dual Mode Phones

Any device (fixed phone, mobile phone, computers, PDAs, fax machines etc.) will work with Net2MAX, but in order to experience the true power of Net2MAX at least one Dual Mode handset (Wi-Fi/GSM) should be used.

Current specification for an entry level Dual Mode Phone:

  1. Wi-Fi:       802.11g (prefer 802.11n)
  2. Mobile:       GSM GPRS (prefer 3G HSDPA)
  3. QoS:       none (prefer DiffServ and 802.11e EDCA)
  4. Power Save:       none (prefer 802.11e U-APSD)
  5. Synchronisation:       none (prefer SyncML for contact and calendar)
  6. Charger:       USB Charger (needed for heavy use)

At May 2008 retail prices, Nokia Dual Mode Phone is about EUR350 and No-Brand Dual Mode is about EUR100.

Optional Accessories

  1. 1 x GSM modem (attach to Community Station for SMS traffic)
  2. 1 x TV Tuner (attach to Community Station for TV recording)

2.2 Time Frames

Approximately 2 months, it takes about 1 month for set up of trial and another month for evaluation.

3 Pilot

3.1 Phase 1

Support of up to 1000 pilot customers with Community Stations inside carrier's data centre. In additional to functional evaluation, this will stress the Net2MAX's ability to handle different application mix (voice, streaming, web, file) and user mix (heavy, light) with good quality using carrier facilities.

3.2 Phase 2

Support of up to 10,000 pilot customers with Community Stations on customer sites. In additional to functional evaluation and quality evaluation, this will test Net2MAX's ability to scaling out to large numbers of users and the ability to manage them in a distributed manner (via the communities).
